Autumn is the season to let your fragrance grow warmer. As the light shortens and the evenings draw in, the bright citrus and watery florals of summer can start to feel thin, and the notes that sit deeper in a perfume come into their own: amber and vanilla, woods and spice, iris and leather. We have chosen a short selection that brings those notes forward, grouped by the kind of warmth each offers, with a candle and two diffusers to carry the mood through the house.
What Makes a Scent Feel Autumnal?
Most perfumes unfold in three stages. The top notes are what you smell first and fade soonest; the heart follows; the base is what stays on the skin longest. Summer scents tend to lead with the top. Autumn scents lean on the heart and the base: resins and amber, vanilla, sandalwood and cedar, and warm spices such as cardamom, clove and cinnamon. Concentration plays its part too, which is why most of our choices are eaux de parfum. If you would like to know what that phrase on the bottle means, Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette, Eau de Cologne: What the Difference Means sets it out.
Amber and Vanilla
This is the softest, most enveloping kind of warmth, and the easiest place to begin. Kilian Angels' Share opens on a cognac-led accord with a rich caramel warmth, adds oak absolute and cinnamon, and settles on sandalwood, praline and vanilla. Calvin Klein Eternity For Women Amber Essence moves from angelica and ylang-ylang to an amber heart and a creamy dry-down of vanilla and benzoin. Van Cleef & Arpels Bois d'Amande, from the house's Collection Extraordinaire, is a woody amber built on almond, cedar, vanilla and musk. Serge Lutens Chergui is the deepest of the four: a spicy oriental of resins, amber and dried fruit, with a warm, smoky character made for evenings and cooler days.

If amber and vanilla already feel like your territory, Choosing a Soft Oriental: Jil Sander Sensations and Its Family explores the gentler end of the same family.
Woods and Spice
For something drier and more structured, look to woods and spice. Guerlain Absolus Allegoria Epices Exquises is a woody-spice composition of cardamom, oud and sandalwood. Givenchy L'Interdit Absolu opens on lavender, cardamom and neroli, passes through jasmine sambac, orange blossom and tuberose, and rests on vetiver, patchouli and tobacco. Estée Lauder Cinnabar is the classic among them: a citrus opening, a heart of clove, cinnamon and carnation, then patchouli, sandalwood and incense, finished with vanilla. Acqua di Parma Oud lifts its oud heart with Calabrian bergamot and sets it on Haitian amyris, sandalwood and leather.

Iris and Leather
Not every autumn fragrance needs to be sweet or smoky. Iris brings a cool, powdery softness and leather a quiet, polished depth, and both sit as easily with a knit as with an evening coat. Hermès 24 Faubourg, an eau de toilette, opens on orange blossom, sets iris and woods at its heart and finishes on vanilla and ambergris. Moncler Le Solstice is a woody floral of iris, sandalwood and white musk, built around a sandalwood accord that feels airy rather than heavy. Etat Libre D'orange Des Palaces brings together almond, leather and powdery notes, with a soft, intimate dry-down.
Scent for the Home
Warmth at home follows the same logic. The Acqua di Parma Cubo Nero Perfumed Candle is a sculpted black ceramic cube with relief engraving, its fragrance inspired by a rich, warm black amber. The La Casa de los Aromas Real Orange & Amber Reed Diffuser pairs citrus top notes with an amber base, in a matte black glass bottle with long reeds. The Eco Happy Orange Cinnamon Reed Diffuser layers orange peel with cinnamon twig, a flame-free choice for a hallway, shelf or bedside table. Whichever you choose, never leave a lit candle unattended. For where to place a diffuser and how to keep it fresh, Reed Diffusers: How to Scent a Room Without a Flame has the detail.
How to Wear a Warmer Scent
A warmer fragrance is best worn lightly. One or two sprays on the pulse points, at the wrists and the base of the throat, from a short distance, is enough. If you are moving on from a summer scent, wear the new one in the evening first, when its base has time to show itself. And if you cannot decide between two, wear one on each wrist through an afternoon and notice which you return to.
Our suggestion: choose the note you already love, whether amber, spice or iris, and begin with the selection that holds it.
